Some degree of water loss is a normal part of owning a pool. Evaporation, splashing, and the natural movement of water during use all contribute to a gradual decline in water level that requires periodic topping off. What is not normal is a water level that drops consistently and quickly, or one that requires frequent refilling to maintain. When that pattern develops, a leak is the most likely explanation, and addressing it promptly is considerably less costly than allowing it to continue.
Distinguishing Normal Loss from a Leak
The challenge with identifying a leak is that evaporation and an actual leak can look similar on the surface. A pool that loses a quarter inch of water per day is generally within the range of normal evaporation, with the rate increasing during hot, windy stretches. Losses beyond that threshold, particularly when they occur consistently across different weather conditions, warrant closer investigation.
The bucket test is a straightforward way to draw that distinction. Fill a bucket with pool water, place it on a submerged step so that it sits partially in the water, and mark the water level on both the inside and outside of the bucket. After 24 hours, compare the two levels. If the pool has lost meaningfully more water than the bucket, evaporation alone is not the explanation.
The Hamptons’ coastal environment, with its salt air, wind exposure, and periods of intense summer heat, can accelerate evaporation enough to complicate this assessment. Repeating the test over several days provides a more reliable result than a single measurement.
Where Leaks Tend to Originate
Leaks in pool systems can originate in several places, and they are not always where you would expect to find them.
Underground plumbing is one of the more common and less obvious sources. Return lines, suction lines, and the connections between them can develop cracks from ground movement, age, or pressure fluctuations. Water loss from a plumbing leak can be substantial before any visible evidence appears at the surface.
Equipment connections are another frequent source of leakage. The fittings, seals, and unions around the pump, filter, heater, and valves experience ongoing wear and can begin to seep in ways that are not immediately obvious. Mineral deposits, corrosion, or moisture around the equipment pad are worth noting and investigating.
The pool shell itself can develop cracks, particularly around fittings, steps, and areas where the structure has experienced ground movement. In gunite pools, these cracks can be subtle and difficult to identify without a professional inspection. Vinyl liners can separate at seams or pull away from skimmer faceplates, creating a path for water to escape.
Skimmer and return fittings, where the plumbing meets the pool wall, are also worth examining. These connections are subject to the same seasonal expansion and contraction as the rest of the structure and can loosen or crack over time.
The Cost of Waiting
A pool leak that goes unaddressed does not simply continue at the same rate. Ongoing water loss erodes the soil beneath and around the pool structure, which can destabilize the shell and the surrounding deck over time. Equipment that runs while water levels are below normal can sustain damage from operating outside its designed parameters. The chemicals added to lost water represent a recurring financial cost that accumulates quickly over a full season.
What begins as a manageable repair can become a significantly more complex and expensive one if it is allowed to continue without investigation.
